Trans*Power

Trans people – that is, people who do not or do not exclusively identify with the sex assigned to them at birth – have the right to healthcare that meets their needs and is free from discrimination. At the same time, they often depend particularly strongly on high-quality healthcare. Research shows that trans people are frequently exposed to stigma and discrimination. This can lead to increased “minority stress,” which may negatively affect both physical and mental health. In addition, some trans people seek medical support as part of a gender transition, which requires accessible and knowledgeable healthcare services.

International studies point to barriers in accessing healthcare and gaps in service provision. However, in Germany, little is currently known about the situation in primary care – especially in general practice. The aim of Trans*power is to systematically assess the experiences and needs of trans* people in primary care and to develop practical recommendations to improve healthcare provision.

In this exploratory mixed-methods study, we will:

  • Conduct longitudinal qualitative interviews with trans people about their experiences and needs in healthcare
  • Conduct qualitative interviews with significant others of trans people
  • Interview primary care practice teams about their experiences and needs when caring for trans patients
  • Survey trans people through an online questionnaire about their experiences and needs in healthcare
  • Analyze health insurance data from AOK Niedersachsen to examine health burdens and treatment pathways of trans people
  • Review medical school curricula to assess the inclusion of content related to gender identity and trans health
  • Develop practical recommendations in collaboration with a range of experts
